Learning outcomes
Students must learn the following: 1. classical and molecular-based methods for studying the gut microbiota; 2. updated knowledge of microbial ecology; 3. knowledge of the effects of the microbiota on the intestinal mucosa and other areas of the body; 4. the role of the microbiota in pathologies.
Course contents
- Introduction to healthy gut microbiota: structure and function
- Methods for studying the gut microbiota (cultural and molecular approaches)
- Changes in the microbiota throughout life
- From eubiosis to dysbiosis: the role of the microbiota in the onset and progression of diseases (including inflammatory bowel disease, degenerative diseases, neoplastic diseases, etc.)
- Tools for modulating the microbiota: prebiotics, probiotics, postbiotics, faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) and ad hoc consortia
Readings/Bibliography
Slides and notes taken during the lessons are essential for exam preparation.
