17952 - Checks and Validation of Phytoderivatives

Academic Year 2025/2026

  • Moduli: Silvia Turroni (Modulo 1) Silvia Turroni (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Applied Pharmaceutical Sciences (cod. 8518)

Learning outcomes

Aim of the course is the knowledge of the composition of microbial ecosystems and the acquisition of traditional and molecular approaches for the microbiological analysis of phytoderivatives. The experimental methods will be acquired through lab exercises.

Course contents

Microbiological requirements for pharmaceutical preparations.

Sterility control.

Microbiological tests of non-sterile products.

Determination of bacterial endotoxins: LAL test.

Microbial contamination and biohazard.

Sterilization: principles and methods.

Preservatives and validation: Challenge test.

Microbial growth and metabolism.

Analysis of microbial communities by culture-dependent methods.

Analysis of microbial communities by culture-independent molecular methods.

Microbial communities of terrestrial environments.

Human microbial ecosystems and modulation tools.

Readings/Bibliography

Slides and notes taken during the lessons are essential for exam preparation. As a reference, the student can deepen the topics on the following texts:

Microbiologia Sistematica, Ambientale ed Industriale. Willey, Sherwood, Woolverton. McGraw-Hill.

Biology of Microorganisms. Brock. Global Edition.

Farmacopea Europea.

Microbiologia Industriale. Matilde Manzoni. Casa Editrice Ambrosiana.

LABORATORY NOTES with the operational description of the experiences.

Teaching methods

Lectures with the support of explanatory slides.
Laboratory exercises.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students (including all the international incoming exchange students, i.e. ERASMUS) must attend Module 1, 2 online [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio], while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class. Information about Module 3 attendance schedule is available on the website of your degree programme ("studiare"--"formazione obbligatoria su sicurezza e salute").

Assessment methods

The assessment will be based on an oral examination consisting of a number of questions relating to both the theoretical part and the practical laboratory part. At the end of the laboratory sessions, there will be a multiple choice test, the result of which will form part of the final grade.

Teaching tools

PC, projector, laboratory experiences.

Students with SLD or temporary or permanent disabilities are recommended to contact the relevant university office in good time (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en). The Office will be responsible for proposing any adaptations to the students concerned, but these must be submitted for the teacher's approval at least 15 days in advance. The teacher will then evaluate them in relation to the course's educational objectives.
