Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student possesses knowledge, within their area of competence, related to the pathophysiology and clinical aspects of ear, nose, and throat (ENT) diseases in both pediatric and adult patients; they are familiar with the fundamentals of functional and instrumental semeiotics, as well as with the methodology and therapy in otorhinolaryngology, with particular attention to emergency conditions

Course contents

Anatomy and physiology of the ear. Otoscopy and otoendoscopy.

Instrumental audiological diagnostics. Classification of hearing loss.

Diseases of the external ear. Diseases of the middle ear: acute and chronic otitis media, cholesteatoma, otosclerosis. Surgical techniques: myringoplasty, tympanoplasty, ossiculoplasty, stapedoplasty.

Vestibology: anatomy and physiology. Clinical and instrumental semeiotics. Diagnosis and treatment of vertigo.

Classification, assessment, diagnosis, and rehabilitation of pediatric hearing loss.

Cochlear implants: indications, surgical technique. Neonatal hearing screening.

Anatomy and physiology of the paranasal sinuses. Inflammatory diseases of the nose and paranasal sinuses. Nasal and sinus polyposis. Epistaxis.

The skull base: anatomy. ENT-related diseases of the anterior and lateral skull base. Surgical techniques.

Benign and malignant tumors of the paranasal sinuses.

Anatomy and physiology of the pharynx. Acute and chronic tonsillitis. Tonsillectomy.

Anatomy and physiology of the larynx. Vocal cord paralysis. Benign and malignant laryngeal diseases. Laryngeal surgery.

Clinical assessment of dyspnea.

Tracheotomy: surgical technique and nursing management.

Anatomy of the neck. Lymph node levels. Neck masses. Neck surgery. Lateral cervical lymph node dissection.

Major salivary glands: inflammatory and tumoral diseases, and surgical approaches.
