Learning outcomes

The course's fundamental objective is to help students answer two fundamental questions: what investments a company should make and how it should raise the funds to finance those investments. Particular attention will be paid to evaluating and financing investments in technological innovation.

Course contents

The course's objective is to provide students with the basic tools of corporate and project finance from the perspective of a management engineer.

The course consists of two modules:

  • Module 1 – Fundamentals of Corporate Finance (Prof. Dario Baldini)
  • Module 2 – Fundamentals of Project Finance (Prof. Renzo Baccolini)

Module 1 consists of the following lessons:

  • Lesson 1 – Economic Perspective vs. Financial Perspective Lesson 2 – Accounting Fundamentals of Finance: The Balance Sheet
  • Lesson 3 – Liquidity Management and Financing Requirements
  • Lesson 4 – Financial Markets and the Company's Financial Structure
  • Lesson 5 – Cost of Capital and CAPM
  • Lesson 6 – Optimal Capital Structure: Leverage
  • Lesson 7 – Investment Decisions and the Value of Time
  • Lesson 8 – Business Valuation

Module 2 consists of the following lessons:

  • Lesson 1 – What is Project Finance (PF) and its Architecture
  • Lesson 2 – Project Development and Management
  • Lesson 3 – The Role of Banks
  • Lesson 4 – Types of Project Agreements and Subcontracts Lesson 5 – The Financial Model and Project Evaluation
  • Lesson 6 – Risks: Analysis and Assessment
  • Lesson 7 – Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) and the Public Sector
  • Lesson 8 – Use of EU Funds in PPPs Edit Texts/Bibliography
