Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student knows how to navigate indices for bibliographic research, and how indices were made differently in different centuries. Students in different degree programmes will receive analogue and digital materials to explore the subject in different directions.
Course contents
The teaching program’s main objective is to contribute to the training of the students towards the bibliographic research, providing the essential coordinates of the discipline, with historical and methodological inputs. The history of bibliography will help to deepen their knowledge of contemporary bibliographies in specialized fields (on paper, on line, etc.), based on their specific degree courses: in this way, students will be able to identify, select and use specialized bibliographies in order to reach bibliographic information, essential for the preparation of their thesis. Bibliography, cornerstone of philological, literary and historical culture, is now expanded by online databases, of which extensive experience will be gained.
Within the course are lectures in general, academic or special libraries, as well as bibliographic research exercises. Lessons and exercises will focus on writing the bibliographic note (Please have a look here: https://www.unibo.it/sitoweb/paolo.tinti/contenuti-utili/5e498cc4 ).

1. M. SANTORO, Lezioni di Bibliografia, con la collaborazione di G. CRUPI, Milano, Editrice Bibliografica, 2012.
2. A. CAPACCIONI, Introduzione allo studio della bibliografia, Milano, Editrice Bibliografica, 2020 or A. MARCHITELLI, Orientarsi tra le informazioni in biblioteca, Milano, Editrice Bibliografica, 2015. For students in History: Il web e gli studi storici: guida critica all'uso della rete, a cura di R. 3. P. PETRUCCI, La competenza bibliografica, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2023, pages selected during the classes (available at the end of the course at Virtuale.unibo.it).
4. P. TINTI, Repertori bibliografici speciali, last ed., download from IOL, Insegnamenti On Line.
All students, whether attending or not the lessons, will also deepen the study of a specialized bibliography related to their research interests and eventually agreed with the teacher, and write a short bibliographical note on a topic that could be connected to their master thesis. For further information on the bibliographical note, please read the notice "How to compile the bibliographical note" on the teacher’s website. If in doubt, feel free to ask the teacher at least two weeks before the exam.
In addition to this, only not attending students must choose one of the following titles:
1. P. CASTELLUCCI, Carte del nuovo mondo. Banche dati e Open Access, Bologna, il Mulino, 2017;
2. J. PALFREY, Bibliotech. Perché le biblioteche sono importanti nell'era di Google, Milano, Editrice Bibliografica, 2016.
Teaching methods
Frontal lessons, direct examinations of bibliographies, visits to the reading rooms of the main university libraries of Bologna and to the Consultation Rooms of some important libraries in Emilia-Romagna, practice with consultation and use of bibliographies and on line databases, as well as bibliographic research exercises, focused on the drafting of a bibliographical note.
Assessment methods
Students who attend at least 75% of the lessons are considered to be attending.
The final exam consists of a three phases oral examination:
1) the critical discussion of the student’s bibliographical note; if the note is the result of an on-line specialized bibliography, this may include the use of it.
2) two questions concerning the required exam texts
3) only for not attending: one question related to the text chosen between the supplementary readings.
Final exams are scheduled at least 7 times an academic year, usually following that date:
‐ 2 in September-November
‐ 2 in January-March
‐ 3 in May-July
