B0388 - LABORATORIO DI METODI QUANTITATIVI 2

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Politics Administration and Organization (cod. 9085)

Learning outcomes

The workshop aims to equip students with soft skills that can prove useful in their future careers. The goal is to develop students' skills through hands-on exercises. The laboratory intends to make students acquire the methodological and technical-IT knowledge useful for the preparation of data for analysis (construction of data matrices) and for the application, through the use of statistical packages such as SPSS and STATA, of analysis techniques basic (monovariate analysis and evaluation of the relationships between qualitative and quantitative variables by means of the production of contingency tables and the corresponding measures of significance and association) applied to data obtained from national and international surveys.

Course contents

The training activity concerns the acquisition of tools for statistical data analysis with Excel, a software dedicated to the creation and management of spreadsheets. Being a component of the Microsoft Office suite, Excel is characterized by widespread availability, unlike other data analysis software packages, which are subject to licensing requirements.

The laboratory is aimed at developing the participants' ability to set up and build data matrices for the collection and organization of information; for data manipulation (value re-coding, construction of typological indices and additives); for the production of univariate, bivariate and multivariate frequency distributions; for the calculation of characteristic values and coefficients; for performing elementary linear regressions; for the production of graphical representations of findings.

Obviously, participants should already possess a prior basic competence in social research methodology and statistical data analysis.
