Learning outcomes
At the end of the seminar (closely related to the objectives of the degree course), students will acquire specific skills and notions in order to deal with linguistic and/or philological and/or literary and/or historical and/or artistic issues and problems.
The seminar aims to provide basic tools for understanding the mechanisms of construction of a digital text (TEI-XML and HTML formats), for knowing the systems currently available for writing and for creating simple documents based on digital transcriptions of literary texts.

Given the seminar nature of the course, attendance is strongly recommended.
The laboratory aims to provide basic tools for understanding the mechanisms of production of a digital text, focusing on standard markup languages for text coding, especially on XML/TEI, with attention to the various levels of possible markup and , in particular, to the philological one.
The first part of the course will be dedicated to this last aspect. In fact, philological tools will constitute a necessary basis for delving into the analysis and construction of digital editions.
The state of the art in the field of digital critical editions (Digital Scholarly Editions) will then be presented, to reflect on the methods of creation, maintenance and use of the literary text in a digital environment. An analysis will therefore be carried out of the ecdotic paradigms most represented today and of the future prospects of digital textuality, with particular attention to the philological and critical aspect.
We will address the concept of digital edition as opposed to that of digitization, delving into the issues of coding and markup languages, with a specific focus on the XML standard and the TEI vocabulary.
Given the seminar nature of the course, the XML/TEI coding of a literary or critical text will be proposed, through collective exercises and independent work supervised by the teaching tutor. Finally, students will be asked to independently design a simple theoretical coding model, supplementary or alternative to the one presented in class.

- Copy philology and author philology: an overview; What do you look at when you look at a manuscript? How is a critical edition done? Differences between diplomatic edition and critical edition; author philology and critique génétique.
- The digital text, from text to hypertext, overview of digital editions and archives, critical issues and potential of digital scientific editions (issues of durability, sustainability, scientificity, evaluation criteria)
- The concept of coding, markup languages (HTML, SGML, XML), DTD and XMLschema
- The TEI vocabulary and the different possible coding levels (with particular attention to the philological aspect)
- Design of a coding model

Oral exam aimed at verifying:
- knowledge and understanding of the topics covered during the course
- XML/TEI file of the text encoded according to the scheme proposed during the lessons
- creation of an integrative or additional theoretical coding scheme
