-
from Oct 03, 2024 to Dec 20, 2024
Learning outcomes
The student knows the theoretical and practical issues of specialized languages. S/he is able to understand, analyze and (re) produce oral discourses used in a variety of specialized domains.
Course contents
In the first part of the course, we will analyse the theory behind specialised communication (the different degrees of specialism, syntax, vocabulary and technical expressions, hierarchy and organisation of information).
We will focus in particular on extracts from the economic-financial, social and medical fields, with a strong focus on current issues. We will host some experts in economic-financial and medical communication. An in-depth seminar will be devoted to the language of art, as a hybrid language between the literary and the technical discourse. We will mainly make use of authentic oral materials in Italian and/or translated or interpreted texts. We will try to highlight the difficulties involved in interpreting specialised speech and reflect on strategies to be implemented when faced with comprehension difficulties of different types.
The teaching of 'Specialised Languages' is part of the integrated course 'Institutional and Specialised Communication', which focuses on the intralinguistic, interlinguistic and intercultural analysis of different types of texts (written and oral) of institutional communication.
Readings/Bibliography
For a smooth progression of the topics, it is recommended to read the essays in the order they are listed in the bibliography.
The material (slides and others) used in class is an integral part of the curriculum and is available on Virtuale platform.
Bibliographic references may be changed or integrated until the beginning of the course.

Teaching methods
This teaching aims to enhance the critical analysis skills of a specialist discourse in order to identify more quickly the complex transitions and discursive strategies implemented by the speaker(s). Alongside the strengthening of critical reflection on the characteristics of the discourse, skills of transformation, reformulation, explanation and synthesis will be developed, consistently with the different contexts in which the interpreters-mediators will work.
The course will consist of in-depth theoretical lessons and practical work on texts. The active participation of students is therefore required.
Assessment methods
Score assignment:
-practical work on a specialist discourse: max.15 points out of 30.
