Learning outcomes
The Laboratory 1 is focused on the critical analysis of urban transformation processes. At the end of the course students understand the methodologies for a theoretical and empirical interpretation of urban social processes. They can interpret the main theories in urban studies and apply the most significant methodologies related to urban studies.
Course contents
BRIDGING COURSES
The laboratory is the conclusion of a study program in the field of human geography related to different topics of urban geography, economics, and environmental studies. Attending students are requested to have attended and/or token as exam the courses of:
- Introduzione alla geografia umana e Geografia politica (obbligatori per tutti gli iscritti)
- Geografia economica
- Geografie e politiche dell'ambiente
- Geografia urbana
TEACHING ACTIVITIES
The laboratory (150 hours) is organized in two parts
The first part (40 hours) is related to the study of contemporary urban transformation through in-depth analysis of the following topics:
- Politics and processes of urban regeneration
- Globalization, supply chains and global cities networks
- Environmental issues and post-human city
- Heritage and commodification
This part is also dedicated to methodologies and techniques in geographical research, with regard to:
- Bibliographical research
- Discourse analysis
- Archival research
- Fieldwork research
The second part (110 hours) is dedicated to field research experiences, class/group discussion and other cooperative activities.
Readings/Bibliography
Bibliography will be indicated at the beginning and during the laboratory.
Teaching methods
The Laboratory provides for a blended teaching including lessons, seminars, research field and group activities. Regular attendance of the classes is required.
Assessment methods
The final exam consists in a paper related to a case study. The topic has to be planned in agreement with the professors and can be realized also in a group. Once submitted and approved, the paper is presented and discussed in a public meeting with the professors, all the involved students and eventual external experts. Students have to attend at least 80% of the meetings and activities.
