73505 - Laboratory Of Materials Characterization M

Academic Year 2024/2025

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Chemical and Process Engineering (cod. 8896)

Also valid for Second cycle degree programme (LM) in Environmental Engineering (cod. 8894)

Learning outcomes

Ability of performing basic characterization of mechanical, thermal and morphological properties of materials.

Course contents

Requirements/Prior knowledge

A prior knowledge and understanding of the physical and mechanical properties is required to attend with profit this Course.

Fluent spoken and written English is a necessary pre-requisite: all lectures and tutorials, and all study material will be in English.

Course Contents

Tests for the investigation of the nature and microstructure of materials (absolute and bulk density, water absorption, open porosity, mercury intrusion porosimetry, XRD, SEM + EDX, abrasion test, etc.).

Tests for the investigation of the mechanical properties of materials (strength test, impact test, hardness test, etc.).

Tests for the investigation of the thermal properties of materials (DSC, TGA, etc.).

Ageing and durability tests on materials with relation to their environment.

Readings/Bibliography

The educational material shown during the lessons will be at students disposal.

Standards and recommended readings supporting the applied experimental techniques will be provided during the laboratory classes.

Teaching methods

The laboratory training is integrated by numerical elaboration of the obtained experimental data and interpretation of the results with relation to the properties of the investigated materials.

"In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires all students to carry out Modules 1 and 2 by e-learning [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi -and-opportunities / health-and-assistance / health-and-safety / safety-and-health-in-places-of-study-and-training] and participation of specific training on safety and health protocols (Module 3). Information on the date and method of attendance of module 3 can be consulted in the section of the study program website."

Assessment methods

During the main experimental activities in the laboratory, students have to complete a sheet.

Final oral test.

The final test will evaluate the achievement of the teaching objectives:

- Understanding of the main investigation techniques for the determination of the nature and the microstructure of materials, along with their results.

- Understanding of the main investigation techniques for the determination of the mechanical and thermal properties, and of the possible results for the different materials classes.

The final grade (pass/non pass) is based on the average of the grades in three questions on topics concerning the teaching objectives.

The test dates for the whole year and the registration lists are available on-line on the official AlmaEsami website (the lists are closed 48 hours before each exam date).

Teaching tools

Notes on the subjects of the course will be provided through websites.

Laboratory training on the tests for materials characterization. Tests will be carried out on the most significant typologies of materials with relation to the test itself and the engineering applications of materials.
