Learning outcomes

After completing this course, the student has knowledge of keyctechniques that enable the preparation of herbal products or more generally of formulations of healthy interest. In particular has the necessaryknowledge related to the bioavailability and release from traditional and innovative vehicles.

In addition, the student has adequate knowledge of national and community legislation on medicinal plants and herbal products.

Part I - Technology and Legislation of Herbal Products (Prof.ssa Barbara Luppi, 6 cfu)

Regolatory framework of products containing botanicals.

LADME system. Bioavalability and administration routes. Release of an active substance from a dosage form.

Strategies to enhance solubility. Complex, micelle and salt formation.

Solid dosage forms. Powders. Granulates. Tablets. Capsules. Coated dosage forms. Properties, formulation, preparative technologies and controls.

Liquid dosage forms. Solutions. Emulsions. Suspensions. Properties, formulation, preparative technologies and controls.

Semisolid dosage forms. Ointments, creams, gels and pastes. Properties, formulation, preparative technologies and controls.

Micro e nanoparticles. Micro/nanosphere. Micro/nanocapsules. Liposomes. Properties, formulation, preparative technologies and controls.

Part II - Formulation of Herbal Products (Prof.ssa Barbara Luppi, 3 cfu)

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical laboratory.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students (including all the international incoming exchange students, i.e. ERASMUS) must attend Module 1, 2 online [https://www.unibo.it/it/servizi-e-opportunita/salute-e-assistenza/salute-e-sicurezza/sicurezza-e-salute-nei-luoghi-di-studio-e-tirocinio], while Module 3 on health and safety is to be attended in class. Assessment methods

Oral examination on the whole program (theoretical and practical modules). The exam will also include the discussion of the formulation aspects of a food supplement on the market. For the oral examination, registration by AlmaEsami list is required.
