14041 - Biochemistry Lab-based Course (L-Z 4)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: Single cycle degree programme (LMCU) in Medicine and Surgery (cod. 5904)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student acquires methodological and applicative elements useful for integrating the knowledge gained in lessons of Chemistry and Biochemistry.

Course contents

BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY

In-depth study of the quantification of the concentration of solutions containing proteins or nucleic acids through UV-visible spectrophotometry or fluorescence analysis.

NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY

Computer exercises in the field of Metabolic and Nutritional Biochemistry using the "Nutrigeo" software (Progeo), capable of guiding the operator in building a personalized dietary plan. Using this innovative and professional software, students perform a process for the development of personalized diets, starting from measuring the energy expenditure of an individual, assessing their nutritional status, and ultimately designing balanced nutritional programs aimed at the prevention and/or treatment of specific conditions.

Teaching methods

The laboratory activities in small groups will be carried out after a thorough explanation in classroom lectures of the theoretical principles underlying the exercises, the use of laboratory equipment, and safety regulations for handling products and equipment.

Considering the nature of the activity and the adopted teaching methods, attendance in this training activity requires the prior participation of all students in the Safety Modules 1 and 2, conducted through e-learning, focusing on safety in study environments.

Assessment methods

The laboratory activities contribute to achieving the educational objectives of the General Biochemistry module.

Oral examination (refer to the Metabolic Biochemistry course).
