Learning outcomes

At the end of the laboratory the student knows how to organize and collect complex information in a coherent form, and knows how to apply critical analysis methodologies on linguistic sciences.

She/He knows how to identify a research problem relevant to philological research and knows how to identify and appropriately use the sources of information necessary to address it.

Course contents

The objective of the laboratory is to identify and analyze the main dynamic features of the Italian book market.

The following topics are explored in depth:

The evolution of demand and reading propensity, distinguishing by age, gender, qualification, geographical region. The analysis will be based on the use of the main information sources (ISTAT and AIE data).

The segmentation by genre of the Italian book market (Italian and foreign fiction, children's publishing, non-fiction,...). The analysis will evaluate the qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the different segments.

The effects of pricing and promotion policies on the market and the impact of literary prizes will also be evaluated.

Teaching methods

The Laboratory has an applied content and aims to develop the learning of information sources and quantitative analysis and research methodologies relating to the Italian book publishing market.

In the first part the teacher will present the research questions and the related data sources, as well as the analysis methodologies to be applied (based on the Excel spreadsheet).

In the second part, participants develop the empirical research (individually or in small groups) under the supervision of the teacher, presenting the progress of the research.

Finally, the results obtained are presented and discussed.

Assessment methods

The assessment is based on: participation in meetings, proactivity in the proposed research activity; interaction with the other participants in the Laboratory and with the teacher; development of autonomous skills of analysis and understanding of the issues of the book publishing market.
