Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the student is able:- to have a general overview of the housing conditions at the different territorial scales; - to analyze and interpret the phenomenon of housing discomfort at the different territorial areas; - to develop socio-spatial analysis of housing demand; - to understand and evaluate, starting from the spatial variable, the housing needs.

Course contents

Reading and processing data and information represent pivotal activities in all areas of research and in many professional activities. Through them it is possible to provide photographs of specific social phenomena as well as to read and assess their trend over time and space.

The course, identifying the focus of attention in the spatial variable and focusing on the phenomenon of housing need, aims to provide students with the theoretical and technical knowledge for the interpretation of thematic maps and cartographic elaborations. The course offers the basic skills for a first approach to personal design and production using in particular the QGIS software.

In-depth topics:

Introduction to the issue of housing need

Introduction to cartography and the use of thematic maps

 - What is it, why is it used, available software, necessary preliminaries

Using QGIS

 - Introduction to the use of QGIS: definitions, basic concepts, download and installation, interface

- Work project setting: data import, styles management, labeling, creation and modification of fields, composer and printing procedure

Cartography and housing need

 -Practical examples, empirical cases, group exercises

Readings/Bibliography

The professor will provide specific bibliographic indications based on the needs of the students during the course itself

Teaching methods

Frontal lessons with the use of supports. Discussion of empirical cases and exercises. the maximum collaboration of the students present is required.

Assessment methods

The recognition of credits takes place where the following conditions are met:

1. frequency of seminar meetings (at least 7 out of 10)

2. students will have to deepen one aspect or one element related to the phenomenon of housing need within a paper, supported by the use of an explanatory map, preferably created independently. The in-depth focus will be agreed with the teacher and the essay (between 10,000 and 20,000 characters) must be delivered at least 10 days before the date of the exam.
