Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows the main classical sociological theories relevant to the formation of a sociological vision of law and functional to the analysis of the labour market. He is able to use specific terminology and apply the sociological skills acquired.

Course contents

The course is divided into two modules.

The first module will be dedicated to the exposition of the theories and philosophical and legal currents that have contributed to the formation of a sociological vision of the law functional to the analysis of the labour market. In particular, the classical authors (particulary Marx, Weber, Durkheim) and their heritage in contemporary perspectives will be analysed.

In the second module will be analyzed sociological aspects typical of the Italian labor market with particular attention to contemporary transformations with reference to the following issues:

- tertiarisation, flexibility and externalisation of the labour market, including atypical forms of regulation;

- unemployment (analysing the figures of the employed, unemployed and inactive, dealing with issues such as unemployment of the two Italies, youth unemployment, intellectual unemployment and long-term unemployment);

- the participation of women in work (dwelling on the so-called "double home-work presence", on the feminisation of the demand for labour and on the long-standing problem of gender segregation);

- undeclared work and double work (from irregular employment to undeclared work);

- immigrants in the Italian labour market (following the evolution of migratory flows in Europe and trying to answer the question of whether immigrants are, for Italian workers, competitors, complementary or substitutes);

- employment policies, and in particular measures at local level

Teaching methods

The course comprises face-to-face lectures that will be held in Semester II; students are invited to check the location and times of studies on the course page.

Teaching will make use of technological aids (audio-video and PowerPoint slides). Student involvement will be solicited by analyzing original documents and official reports.

Assessment methods

The examination will be conducted exclusively in oral form with the aim of verifying the adequate acquisition of knowledge by the student in accordance with the course objectives. Learning will be assessed by means of an interview with the lecturer and the collaborators of the chair, on the topics covered by the course programme.

The exam grade will take into account the following aspects

- knowledge of institutional profiles

- ability to analyse case law and doctrinal orientations;

- ability to make connections between the different parts of the programme;

- ability to develop critical arguments;

- articulation of the exposition;

- accuracy of presentation;

- accuracy in the use of context-specific terminology.

Specifically, the following assessment criteria will be taken into account to assign the final mark, which will be expressed in thirtieths:

- knowledge and understanding of the notions and principles of the subject and of the legal concepts on which the questions focus, and the level of in-depth study about these aspects (50%);

- ability to make connections between the different parts of the programme, ability to critically analyse the topics covered in the examination question and ability to apply them to concrete cases (20%);

- appropriate use of technical and legal vocabulary, ability to expound on the topic of the questions posed, ability to analyse and evaluate relevant sources and acquisition of the study method (30%).

Registration will be only through the informatic system AlmaEsami.



Students wishing to apply for the thesis are requested to come to the reception interview, the only way to formalise the assignment of the final thesis, no less than 5 months in advance if three-year students. Formal admission to the thesis work is conditional on the submission of an initial index accompanied by an essential bibliography on the topic proposed by the student or suggested by the lecturer and/or his/her collaborators. A detailed vademecum for writing the thesis will be distributed to undergraduates.


Teaching tools

The teaching activity is supplemented by power-point presentations, projections of short video films closely related to the topics covered, which will be downloadable from the platform dedicated to teaching resources for the exclusive use of the students attending, who are provided with an access password.

Students who, for reasons dependent on disabilities or specific learning disorders (DSAs), need compensatory tools can communicate their needs to the Teacher in order to be addressed to the contacts and agree on the most appropriate measures
