Learning outcomes

The course aims at providing students with a framework on the main economic theories addressing the organization of production and regional development, with a specific focus on the role of business strategies and industrial policy.

The course deals with complex issues with a language as simple as possible, introducing students to theoretical economic debates and, whenever possible, to the critical discussion of real-world case studies related to the experiences of Emilia Romagna, Italy, Europe and North America, as well as emerging countries.

The course favors the acquisition of the following skills: (a) a general autonomy in the understanding and analysis of economics applied to the industry and the territory, with specific reference to the themes of innovation and sustainability; (b) autonomously using specific tools (e.g., databases) useful for identifying strengths and shortcomings in the context of industrial and territorial dynamics; (c) applying adequate techniques for the analysis and definition of industrial policy interventions across territories.

Course contents

THE COURSE WILL BEGIN ON MONDAY, OCTOBER 2, 2023.

The course is designed to introduce the students to basic principles of economical frameworks, their application to industries, territories and the environment and the role of industrial policy across these realms.

0. Introduction to economics: principles of economic analysis (micro and macro) and economic policy: principles of business organization, management and strategy. 1. Applied Economics: industry and territories; 2. Principles of industrial economics and policy; 3. Principles of regional economics and policy; 4. Principles of environmental economics and sustainability.

Teaching methods

For “attending students”: blended teaching involving frontal lectures, presentations by students, laboratory activities and participation in classroom discussions.

For “not-attending students”: individual study of the book (see below “Assessment methods for not-attending students”)

Students are required within one week from the beginning of the course to decide whether to be “attending students” or not.

Exam component I: Written exam (multiple choice questions) on the topics covered during the classes. To get prepared for the written exam, students are required to study the course slides and the following readings:

Exam component II: Laboratory activities, including presentations and discussions, during the second part of the course.

 

ii) Assessment for “not-attending students”:

Not-attending students will take a written exam (multiple choice questions) at the end of the course accounting for 100% of the mark. This exam is based on the study of the following textbook:
