90970 - Technical Sciences of Abdomen and Thorax Radiological Imaging with and without contrast medium (BO)

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Imaging and Radiotherapy techniques (cod. 9079)

Learning outcomes

The student acquires the techniques for the radiological study of the apparatus with and without MDC, the preparation of the patient and knows the relative MDC, the rules of radiation protection and patient handling.

Course contents

The teaching of the Course of Technical Sciences of Abdomen and Chest Radiological Imaging with and without contrast medium aims to make the student acquire the techniques useful for radiological studies of the thoraco-abdominal systems with and without contrast medium with the relative preparations of the patient in the various methods.

The program is divided into:

1) Geometric parameters, planes and projections and landmarks

2) Natural and artificial contrast medium used for diagnostic purposes in the human body

3) Radiographic Study of the Chest: Anatomy, projections, criteria and problems based on the method of execution (standard, bedside, in OS)

4) Radiographic Study of the Abdomen: Anatomy, projections, criteria and problems based on the method of execution (standard, bedside, standing and supine, in OS)

5) Radiological Study of the Digestive System: Diagnostic investigations with and without contrast medium in reference to the First Ways, Esophagus, Stomach, Small Enema, Opaque Enema, Defecography and Fistulography, with Anatomy, preparation and execution, projections and criteria of correctness .

6) Radiological study of Swallowing and Salivary glands, with Anatomy, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and criteria of correctness.

7) Radiological Study of the Biliary Tracts: Investigations in reference to Intraoperative and Post-operative Cholangiography, Percutaneous Cholangiography and ERCP, Cholacystography for OS and Cholangiography, with Anatomy, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and criteria of correctness.

8) Radiological Study of the Urinary Tract: Cystography, Descending Urography, Retrograde Cystourethrography, Pyelography, with Anatomy, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and criteria of correctness.

9) Radiological Study of Male and Female Reproductive Systems: Hysterosalpingography with Anatomy and radiographic techniques for the study of the Male Reproductive System, preparation and execution, investigations with and without contrast medium, projections and criteria of correctness.

10) Radiological Study of the Chest and Abdomen in the Pediatric field: Anatomy, projections, criteria and problems based on the method of execution (standard, bedside, standing and supine, in OS)

Readings/Bibliography

The Bibliography will be updated and communicated at the beginning of the lessons and the slides shared during the frontal lessons will be delivered

Teaching methods

Interactive Frontal Lectures with PPT presentation, case discussions through the vision of Diagnostic Case Reports for Thoraco-abdominal Images, practical and theoretical exercises in the classroom and in the field and related discussion with a Clinical Reasoning Cycle approach

The lesson will be recorded and any remote presence will be possible under the terms and conditions decided by the University of Bologna

Assessment methods

At the end of the course the student will be evaluated through two tests
Part 1
Written assignment with open questions preparatory to the oral exam.
During the written exam the candidate will be shown an X-ray image of a body area for which they must be identified
The anatomical parts
clinical indications
the study technique
any problems
Part 2
Oral interview during which the topics covered during the lectures will be considered also through the vision / discussion of radiographic images
They will be evaluated
knowledge of the contents
the argument
clarity and expository mastery
interaction and critical ability

Teaching tools

Didactic Material: Lectures with the use of PPT and through the UNIBO VIRTUAL platform all the didactic contents covered during the lessons will be shared

Instruments: X-ray equipment, X-ray digital systems, X-ray cassettes, X-ray material and more.

The didactic material could be updated and / or modified according to the technical-scientific evolution and the didactic organizational contingencies.

All students will be provided with a copy of the teaching material used during the lessons.

Students can schedule meetings with the teacher via the teacher's email address or by phone at the numbers listed on the teacher's website for further information or further explanations.
