Learning outcomes

By the end of the workshop students will be able to plan a research path, collecting, selecting and organizing data and documentary information thanks to the specific tools acquired during the course unit; they will be able to analyse documentary, material and iconographic sources in a critical light and from a diachronic perspective. They will able to write a short text without assistance. They will have learned to be methodologically rigorous and precise. Attuned to group work, they will have learned judgment on a professional, human and ethical plane.

Course contents

LABORATORY OF DOCUMENTATION OF ARCHAEOLOGY

The archeology laboratory includes a classroom activity (= 2 credits), preparatory to the excavation, and a field activity (= 4 credits) in one of the archaeological sites organized by the Department.

Classroom lectures are held by laboratory technicians and address all aspects of an archaeological excavation, from preventive activities (geophysical surveys and remote sensing), to excavation and survey techniques, to the study of materials and findings.

Preparatory and supplementary laboratory for participation in archaeological excavations of the Academic year 2023/2024 - Bachelor’s Degrees in History and Letters.
Students of the degree course in Humanities (Classical curriculum) or of the degree course in History interested in attending the Laboratory of Documentation of Archaeology, may include in the study plan the following activity: 27276 - Laboratory (1) Arch. (6 CFU) of which the Laboratory of Documentation of Archaeology is an integral part and allows you to acquire 2 credits.
For the A.A. 2023/2024 the Laboratory of Documentation of Archaeology is scheduled from 6 to 9 May 2024 (according to the detailed calendar below) and includes lectures, practical exercises, and individual work activities, for a total of 50 hours corresponding to 2 credits.

To participate in the workshop you don’t have to register just show up at the lessons where your presence will be marked.

2) Site scale: Excavation and documentation: Topographic and photographic survey. 07/05/24, 9.30-13.30 (Enrico Giorgi), at Aula Gambi.
3) The objects from the excavation: the documentation of the ceramic finds. 08/05/24, hours 9.30-13.30 (Chiara Mattioli), at Aula Gambi
4) The objects from the excavation: the documentation of the fauna and botanical finds. 09/05/24, 9.30-13.30 (Fabio Fiori and Marialetizia Carra), at Aula Gambi

At the end of the workshop, students are given a certificate for the cumulative recording of ECTS.

The teachers responsible for the record of the CFU are for the cdl in Letters Professor Isabella Baldini and the CDL in History Professor Elisabetta Govi.

IMPORTANT: Students are advised that to obtain the 6 ECTS completed

The excavation activity, corresponding to a two-week shift, can be carried out in one of the archaeological sites chosen by the student and according to the specific interest (prehistory, classical area, late antiquity and medieval or oriental archaeology). To participate in the excavation, it is necessary to apply when excavation notices are published on the website of the archeology section.

In consideration of the types of activities and teaching methods adopted, the attendance of this training activity requires the performance of all students of Modules 1 and 2 in e-learning mode and the participation in Module 3 of specific training on safety and health in the places of study. Information on dates and methods of attendance of Module 3 can be consulted in the specific section of the degree program website.
