07654 - Bioethics

Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Nursing (cod. 8473)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module the student possesses the knowledge to develop critical skills with respect to the main bioethical issues of the nursing profession and basic skills for the rational management of ethical problems encountered in concrete situations of clinical practice

Course contents

The module aims to offer theoretical knowledge in the ethical field and to "train" to identify and rationally manage the ethical problems encountered in the concrete situations of clinical practice. Therefore, each lesson will be divided in a part dedicated to some fundamental notions of bioethics and a part dedicated to discussion and exercises in small groups followed by discussion in the plenary (i.e., all together).

The subjects that will be covered and that will be subject to assessment are the following:

-Introduction to bioethics, historical notes

- Ethical dilemmas and practical dilemmas

- Outline of the main ethical theories: principledism, utilitarianism, deontology, ethics of character, ethics of care, personalism

-Case studies: confidentiality and HIV, telling the truth

-End of life decisions

At least one third of the lesson hours will be devoted to exercises in small groups followed by discussion in plenary. During the lessons, topics of discussion not included in the program may emerge, which will be deepened as case studies if deemed necessary by the students.
