Course contents

The course focuses on ethnographic research practices - from an anthropological perspective – and on their relevance for social workers operating in fields marked by social and/or educational disadvantage. With intermittent theoretical lectures, group work and participatory workshops, we will be exploring some challenges and opportunities to critically approach socio-cultural complexity and developing an ethnographic attitude to navigate professional social and educational worlds. By concretely discussing ethnographies of social services and public policies, the course aims to explore how an ethnographic approach can afford social workers a powerful and unique vehicle for obtaining an in-depth, contextualized understanding of people' perspectives and experiences as well as problematize the institutional, organizational and social contexts in which they operate or will operate professionally.
