Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student reaches a good level of bibliographic, methodological and specific competence necessary for the writing of the thesis. The student reaches a basic awareness that guarantees him to face the chosen topic with due solidity.

Course contents

The course aims to offer the methodological assumptions of bibliographic research, through the examination of the main resources, in order to guide students in the preparation of the section "references" of their degree thesis. Resources on both traditional and digital support will be analyzed.

 

Main topics

 1. Bibliography: the document and the documentary collections, with reference also to the digital context; the repertorial bibliography.

2. Bibliographic research: identifying and evaluating information resources (bibliographic repertories, catalogs, digital archives, encyclopedias, dictionaries, search engines, portals, databases, periodicals).

3. Bibliographic citation: using and citing the resources (citation styles, editorial rules).

4. Special bibliographic research for literary disciplines: sources in the Italian, European and international context, with particular reference to students' research fields.

Teaching methods

Lectures and classroom exercises. Visit and exercises in two libraries of the University of Bologna are supposed to be scheduled as well.

Assessment methods

Students will be asked to write a bibliographic note, which will be discussed during an oral exam. The same exam will also include questions on the contents of the texts chosen among the suggested ones (see section "Readings/Bibliography").

The assessment will consider especially the knowledge of the course contents and the ability to use effectively the terminology associated with the subject. In particular, the ability to use the contents studied in drafting the bibliographic note prepared for the exam will be evaluated.
