Academic Year 2023/2024

  • Moduli: Ivano Gorzanelli (Modulo 1) Giorgio Casoni (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Bologna
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Industrial Design (cod. 8182)

Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student is able to interpret contemporary communication phenomena and techniques through the use of basic methodological tools. In particular, the student possesses the methodological tools for understanding and interpreting the social organisation of communication processes, as well as the basic knowledge aimed at focusing on the social, historical, cultural and power context in which they are called upon to operate as designers.

Course contents

Module 1 of this course aims to introduce students to the semiotic and anthropological method for the study of objects and artefacts and for their design. In particular, the first part of the course will be devoted to the main themes of semiotic and anthropological theory applied to design and the role of objects in our daily experience. The second part will focus on how to apply the semiotic and anthropological method to the various phases of product design and communication, through exercises and concrete examples.

Module 2

We are witnessing a revolutionary epoch in industry, often termed the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). This new era is not only redefining industrial boundaries but also profoundly influencing how we perceive and modify both our body and mind. This has been made possible by the synergistic integration of advanced technologies such as biology, computer science, nanotechnologies, and neurosciences. These innovations are empowering humans to influence not just the external environment but also our inner world, including our brain.

In Module 2, we will delve deeper into the core of the 4IR. We will explore the intricate details of the significant transformations brought about by this revolution, beginning with a broad overview and then narrowing our focus to the specifics of the emerging technologies. We will deepen our understanding of the exponential changes these technologies are introducing to our society. Additionally, in the latter part of the module, we will discuss neurotechnologies, highlighting their escalating role in industrial design. Through tangible examples, students will grasp how these technologies are becoming indispensable tools in the design process.
