Course contents

Adapting teaching materials: Translation and beyond

In this seminar we will engage with the teaching/learning materials developed within the ongoing UPSKILLS project. After some introductory information on the project, the core activity will be the translation of one part of the materials from English into Italian, focusing on the modules Text processing, Introduction to scientific research and/or Language data science. The assignments will be distributed based on the number of participants and their interests.

Two additional aspects we will work on will be: (1) adapting the examples and tasks included in the modules, and (2) getting to know the Moodle learning platform from the lecturer/content creator side. Research skills will also be enhanced through discussion of open access, as the translated materials will be made publicly available, with the participants credited for their work.

After the completion of the seminar, the participants will be well-equipped to:
- confidently approach content adaptation tasks that go beyond translation
- reflect on a number of teaching-related issues from the lecturer's side
- autonomously use the Moodle platform as content creators

Teaching methods

A combination of in-person meetings and independent work will be implemented.
The seminar will contain several introductory lectures and practical sessions in which the students familiarise themselves with the materials and the Moodle platform. The students will then be assigned specific tasks to complete in pairs or small groups, otside the classroom. Online peer support will be organised in addition to support by the lecturer, and further in-person meetings will be held to monitor the progress and discuss any outstanding issues.

Assessment methods

Success in learning will be assessed primarily through the completion of the assigned task. A written report on the work will also be required, to be published on a dedicated web page.

A maximum of 25 points will be assigned for the translation and adaptation work:
24-25 points: excellent translation and adaptation competences, with excellent handling of the Moodle platform
20-23 points: very good translation and adaptation competences, with excellent or very good handling of the Moodle platform
16-19 points: good translation and adaptation competences, with at least good handling of the Moodle platform
13-15 points: sufficient translation and adaptation competences, with at least sufficient handling of the Moodle platform
0-12 points: inadequate/seriously deficient translation and adaptation competences

A maximum of 5 points will be assigned for the written report:
5 points: excellent writing skills
4 points: good/very good writing skills
3 points: sufficient writing skills
0-2 points: inadequate/seriously deficient writing skills

Teaching tools

All in-person sessions take place in a computer lab equipped with PCs and a data projector. The materials used for lectures will be made available to the students on Virtuale, while the department's Moodle installation will be used for working on the adaptation.

As concerns the teaching methods of this course unit, all students must attend the online Modules 1, 2 on Health and Safety
