Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students obtain specific and advanced skills - from a lexical, historicalcritical and socio-anthropological point of view - on Islamic sources and culture, as well as the ability to critically explain the contents learned, drawing valid judgments in the historical and social field; they are able to analyze the sources in an autonomous way, documenting accurately the information on which they base their conclusions and giving an account of the methodologies of investigation used. They can collect, also thanks to the use of specific databases, a relevant bibliography to document and adequately deepen their skills; they can recognize and evaluate the elements that promote conflict and social cohesion within the contemporary Islamic world. They are able to communicate both in written and oral forms, the acquired knowledge using also the relevant tools which are adequate to the social and cultural conditions of religious and linguistic pluralism.
Course contents
After an initial theoretical and methodological discussion about the pros and cons of the Mediterranean as an analytical category (week 1), we will survey the most common themes and patterns that have characterized the study of inter-communal relations (week 2). Next, we will examine some cases of interaction between Muslims and Christians (week 3 to 5), both in conflictual and non-conflictual contexts between the 13th to 15th century. We will note the multiplicity of interactions, and by way of historicization we will question the heuristic and epistemological utility of the category "Islamic-Christian relations" .
