Learning outcomes

The product design laboratory in the second year allows the student to acquire more in-depth skills than those of the first year, in the choice and use of materials, in the composition, in the relationship of materials, with places and with the environment.
Starting from the comparison with real cases of design problems proposed extensively or through full-immersion experiences and starting from the re-brief, the student knows how to articulate the meta-design path, prefigure the design process, identify the margins of obtainable results, elaborate an innovative product concept, resulting in a complete and complex design outcome in all its elements.

Course contents

The product design project laboratory intends to investigate the production contexts of the peri-urban and pre-Apennine rural areas of the geographical area between Emilia Romagna, Tuscany and Marche.

In recent years, research and projects have been carried out in different areas of the Mediterranean: the Italian peninsula, Lebanon, Morocco and more. You will choose whether to operate in an Italian or foreign area. In Italy, in particular, one could work in the context of some valleys such as the Reno Valley or Valmarecchia, between Emilia Romagna and Tuscany, focusing attention on the area of some countries such as Porretta Terme or Pennabilli.

The projects must contribute to the enhancement of local rural contexts, even marginal ones, through the development of concepts, ideas and artefacts, which can be produced in small or medium series by artisans or small industrial enterprises.

The laboratory explores the theme of the regeneration of small towns and villages, rethinking the relationships between man, nature and other plant and animal species, thanks to the reactivation of short supply chains and circular economies.

It is believed that students can work as designers, towards a more sustainable future, starting from the study of a natural material. For example, the wicker willow, to rediscover the value of tradition, reinterpret types of products and support the artisanal or industrial production of new families of objects.

The materials to be studied and used will revolve around a natural fiber, a local wood chosen in particular, which can be combined with local fabrics, for example, wool (and its derivatives) or silk and ceramics.

The product lines will be able to highlight the material and immaterial values of places, reworking traditional production techniques and hybridizing them with contemporary techniques.
The research area in which the laboratory is located is defined as "Community Design". The designed products will be able to activate new relationship dynamics between the inhabitants of the places (residents, tourists, students, operators), the places (natural and anthropic environment) and the ecosystem (man, flora, fauna, earth) in a conception of interdisciplinary inter-species project.

The products will be developed by applying a methodology, which deepens the study of the entire supply chain from production, to transport, to sale, to the use of the product itself.

Teaching methods

The students develop the project, supported by the teachers, who hold lessons and organize review meetings of the students' projects. The procedural methodology is set up for sequential and progressive in-depth phases:
- Mapping and study of the place, with a desktop phase and an on-site phase;
- Mapping and study of the physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics of the assigned material;
- Mapping of products made with this material, identification of market limits in the context of the project, limits on production sustainability, studies of production, transport, sales, product use scenarios and study of the supply chain context;
- Assignment of the study of a product chosen from among three identified by the students, two and three-dimensional research and study, with the creation of a summary sheet and comparison of similar products and the study of the designer and the manufacturer, with the creation of two scale models, one structural in iron wire and the other volumetric;
- Development of the design process from the concept, to the preliminary project, to the executive project with the creation of maquettes and prototypes.
- Final exhibition of projects and prototypes in the place chosen as a place of experimentation.

Assessment methods

Monthly meetings to verify the progress of the project.
Monthly delivery to the teacher of in-depth exercises of the project phases:
- Mapping of the assigned material and related supply chains;
- Cataloging and reproduction with models of a product on the market;
- Identification of the project concept;
- Development of the project idea;
- Definition of the final project.
Final exhibition of the product project, with illustration of the 3 phases: research, concept, executive project with prototypes in full or reduced scale.
- Final exhibition of projects and prototypes in the place chosen as a place of experimentation.
