Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student knows how to manage complex sampling plans. She/he will be able to plan complex surveys and to analyze data with advanced statistical tools, to assess and communicate the uncertainty on the obtained estimates.

The student will learn the fundamental statistical tools to build a questionnaire and to analyse data in a multivariate approach. In particular she/he will be able to assess the validity of a questionnaire and to apply models for measures latent constructs, typically used in behavioural sciences applications.

Course contents

First part  (Prof. Daniela Cocchi) the program is valid for the course 84609 - METODI DI CAMPIONAMENTO - 6 cfu)

Sampling in finite populations: the frame. Population and sample. Samping plans and the random variables that manage the selection.

Inference in complex units of any dimension. Role of the intraclass correlation coefficient. Inference for cmplex units selected with varying probaility. Ratio and regression adjustment in sampling complex units. Approximated properties of ratio and regression estimators seen from the residuals.

Small area estimation (also in logical domains)

Finite population inference as a predictive problem and superpopulation models.

Multistage sampling: (The students of the course  84609 - METODI DI CAMPIONAMENTO (6 cfu) are requested to deepen the theoretical part. Students of the  I module of the course METODI DI CAMPIONAMENTO E INDAGINI CAMPIONARIE are not requested to know proofs)

Second module (Prof: Stefania Mignani)

The design of a sampling survey

-the aim of the survey
-the different kinds of survey: total population or a sample

-notes on main sampling designs: probabilistic and not probabilistic
-some technical aspects of a pool

Design
questionnaires.
-How formulate the questions
-the different kind of questions: open, closed, multiple choice
-how to delivery a questionnaire
-the validity of a questionnaire

Methods for analyzing data
-some hints on factor analysis

-Item Response Theory Models for binary and categorical data

Some Laboratories with software R will be arranged

Some examples of researches in socio-behavioural and economic context will be discussed

Readings/Bibliography

First  module (valid for the course 84609 - METODI DI CAMPIONAMENTO - 6 cfu)

A syllabus with most of the topics of the course can be downloaded. It contains the topic of the corese and many examples and exercises.

Also a file containing the main formulae to use for solving exercise may be downloaded.

Further references will be given during the course.

Written and oral test

The online written test will be performed via “Esami on Line” (EOL). Zoom will be the platform for identification and monitoring.

The oral test will be performed either via Teams or Zoom

Second module (Prof: Stefania Mignani)

The exam of the second module includes a written test with a first part focused on questions of theoretical content (both short open-ended and multiple-choice questions) and a second part of open-ended questions commenting on the output of R.

Who WANTS can replace the second part of the written exam with a written report on a case study

The final grade of the II module will be the sum for a maximum of 16 points out of 32 of the evaluation in this report and for 16 points out of 32 of the evaluation of the written test

The case study can be carried out in a group of up to two student. It must be submitted at least two days before partecipationof the written test. After the results of the written test there will be a brief discussion of the submitted report.

The online written test will be performed via “Esami on Line” (EOL). Zoom will be the platform for identification and monitoring.

Please note that the final grade of the entire exam (two modules) is obtained as the average of the grade in the two modules.
