Learning outcomes

At the end of the course the student: - knows the theoretical and methodological grounds of the intercultural approach to education; - is able to plan and lead an educational intervention in multicultural situations (at school or in extra-school environments), cooperating with other educational professionals; - is able to carry out observations, analysis and evaluation of multicultural contexts; - knows how to apply theoretical knowledge in concrete educational situations.

Course contents

The first part of the course will explore the main concepts and knowledge connected to the multicultural societies. It aims to promote understanding and reflection on new possible approaches for active citizenship. The topics covered in the course are the following:

  • multicultural societies and intercultural approach;
  • assimilation, segregation and integration
  • stereotypes, prejudices and vocational approach;
  • second generation children and young people;
  • diversity, differences, valorisation of the differences;
  • conflict management. 

The topics will be explained and discussed with and among students. In the second part of the course, the students are expected to deepen topics in which are particular interested through workgroups aiming at producing a multimedial presentazion to be discussed in plenum with teacher and others students. This presentation could be based on literatur, songs, film or event connected to the topic of the course and constitutes  part of the final assessment.

Frontal lessons, discussions and working group

Assessment methods

Students are presented  different topics of intercultural pedagogy and  after that they are expected to  produce a multimedia presentation connecting them with literatur pieces  or films handling with them and  to present and discuss their work with teacher and other students. The presentation is evaluated on a points range of 30 and each of the 5 assessing elements receives a score from 1 to 6.

3. Costruction of multimedial artefact

4. Capacity to interact with the plenum

5. Capacity to motivate bibliography's selection and expressed points of view.

To this assessment taking place during the course will follow an oral examination espressed on a scale of 30 points and each element to be evaluated receives a score from 1 to 10:

2. Argumentative capacity

3. Capacity to analyse, sinthesyse and interconnect with topic  other disciplines

Power point and films choosen both by teacher and students, literary pieces and newspaper articles on the topic migration and social integration in the multicultural societies
