The wireless network name (SSID) is “eduroam” and is protected by WPA2/AES protocol with PEAP authentication. Users of institutions that adhere to Eduroam, such as the University of Bologna, who visit another adhering institution can use its local wireless network and access it with their credentials (username and password) with no need for additional formalities.
Who it’s for
It is for teachers and researchers, research fellows, PhD students, technical and administrative staff and students of the University of Bologna who visit institutions that adhere to the service.
Guests of the University of Bologna who are members of institutions that adhere to Eduroam.
How to use it
Our University uses WPA2/AES (WPA2 Enterprise) protocols: the most recent operative systems normally do not require any particular settings. Other institutions may use WPA/TKIP protocols. The following is required:
- a device with a wireless card compatible with the radio standards adopted: IEEE 802.11b (2.4 GHz 11 Mbps) and IEEE 802.11g (2.4 GHz 54 Mbps), see the Wi-Fi Alliance website for details. In certain areas, IEEE802.11a (5 Ghz 54 Mbps) and 802.11n Draft 2.0 (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) standards are also available;
- a device with an operative system, drivers and software that support WPA™ - Enterprise, see the Wi-Fi Alliance website for details;
- make sure that your device is set to automatically assign network configurations (DHCP);
- log in on your device following the instructions provided by the hosting institution.
Inside the University of Bologna
The service is reserved to guests of the University and institutions that adhere to Eduroam and can be used only in areas where the “eduroam” network is detected. When connecting, the certificate shown by the authentication server must be the same as the one shown in the following image: image of the certificate shown by the authentication server (in Italian) [.pdf 145 KB]. The details you need to check – by clicking on Details – are the RADIUS server name, which must always be: radius-cs.unibo.it, and the root CA, which must always be: AddTrust External CA Root. By confirming the connection, even if an error is displayed, you will connect to the network.
Once connected to the “eduroam” network, you will be able to access the following services:
- Web (HTTP, HTTPS, passive FTP);
- Email (POP3, POP3s, IMAP4, IMAPs, SMTPs and SMTP submission via STARTTLS);
- Secure protocols (SSH, IPsec VPN, OpenVPN, PPTP, RDP).
Only internal DNS servers – preconfigured by the DHCP – within the Almanet network, are supported.
Outside the University of Bologna
The technical characteristics of the wireless connection offered by Eduroam are similar to those of ALMAWIFI, the only difference being that the name of the wireless network is shown as “eduroam”: local access authentication will be managed safely through our University server.
The connection process in the various institutions may differ slightly, therefore, users are advised to always check the information on how to connect on the websites of the relevant institutions, which normally provide detailed instructions for the various operating systems.
