Language requirements

Erasmus+ mobility for Studies Call for Applications a.y. 2026/27: language skills assessment and categories exempt from testing.

To participate in the Erasmus+ mobility for Studies call for applications, all candidates are required to assess their language skills. The languages to be assessed must correspond to those specified in the individual vacancy the applicant is interested in, which will be listed in the Call for applications. These may include English, French, Spanish, German or Portuguese.

A minimum language proficiency level of A2, as defined by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), is mandatory for applicants to  the Erasmus+ mobility for studies Call for Applications. This minimum language proficiency level consists in a general eligibility requirement of the Erasmus+ mobility for studies Call for Applications and  must be met strictly before the application deadline Thus, application of candidates that fail to meet the language requirement level will be considered incomplete and therefore excluded.

Please note: some Erasmus+ exchange partner Universities may require a language proficiency level higher than the A2 CEFR level set by the Erasmus+ mobility for studies call for applications. Therefore, students should carefully check the language requirements of the host institution they are interested in. The students must check the required level, the type of certification (if any) required, and the date of issue or the date when the test has been taken that partners consider as valid.

Furthermore, the academic coordinator may have included in the exchange vacancy details some additional information regarding the required language requirements. The language level is an eligibility requirement, but it can also be used for the evaluation of the application.

Language skills must be verified by satisfying one of the following criteria:

Assessment tests organized by the University Language Centre - CLA

Candidates may enroll for tests organized by the University of Bologna Language Centre (CLA) from 8 January 2026, 1:00 PM, Italian Time, to 16 January 2026, 1:00, Italian Time (subject to availability) via AlmaRM, the online platform.

The assessment tests will be held in person from 21 January 2026 to 4 February 2026.

Registration is required to take the assessment test.

  • enter the “Gestione carriera” (“Career management”) section and click on “Test di lingua” (“Language tests”);
  • select “Erasmus+ mobilità per Studio” (“Erasmus+ Mobility for Study”) as the type of test;

For further information and support, candidates may contact aform.accertamentilinguistici@unibo.it from 8 January 2026 to 5 February 2026.

It is reminded that from 18 November 2025 to 21 November 2025, there has been an anticipated language test round for the Erasmus+ for Study Call 2026/27. This round and the one organized between 21 January 2026 to 4 February 2026 are considered as a unique session. Therefore, it is possible to sit one test for up to two languages, and to sit the test for each chosen language overall in the two rounds.

Students can participate in the January/February 2026 session only if they:

  • did not register for the November 2025 session;
  • registered for the November 2025 but did not show up to take the test;
  • took the test in November 2025 and obtained A1 level;
  • took the test in November 2025 but did not achieve any level.

Therefore, students who took the test in November 2025 and obtained an A2 level or higher cannot retake the test during the January/February 2026 session in the same language(s).

Students who pass the language assessment test may obtain its automatic recognition as a curricular language proficiency test, only if they submit an Erasmus+ for Studies a.y. 2026/27 application and meet or exceed the proficiency level required by their study plan.

Exemptions from sitting the assessment tests

Students who belong to one of the categories listed in the document Language requirements – assessment modalities for the language requested by the exchange may be exempted from sitting the language assessment tests organized by the University Language Centre - CLA. These students must declare their exemption status in the application and upload the relevant supporting documents, if required.

For further information and support students may contact aform.accertamentilinguistici@unibo.it from 8 January 2026 to 5 February 2026.
