1. Start by obtaining information on how to enrol as soon as possible. Every degree programme always includes verification of the requirements and adequacy of your personal skills: check the methods and deadlines on the website of your degree programme. 

2. If you want to enrol in an international programme, prove your knowledge of the applicable language. To see how to do this, read the call for applications or admission notice.

3. If you are a non-resident student, search for accommodation in advance.

4. If you hold a foreign qualification, collect and prepare the documents you need (timing may change depending on the country where you obtained your qualification).

The first steps

   - you are a citizen of an EU member country: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Hungary; 
   - you are a citizen of one of these countries: Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Switzerland and the Republic of San Marino;  
   - you have dual citizenship, one of which is in the European Union. 
2. Start by obtaining information on how to enrol as soon as possible. Degree programmes always require verification of the requirements and adequacy of personal preparation. Check the procedures and deadlines on the degree programme website. Read general information on admission tests. 
3. If you want to enrol in an international programme, prove your knowledge of the applicable language. To see how to do this, read the call for applications or the selection notice.
4. Search for accommodation in advance.

5. Collect documentation on your foreign qualification (the time required may depend on the country in which you obtained it).

• Check whether you have one or more of the following requirements for equivalent status: 
• you are a citizen of a non-EU country, but you have one of the following residence permits, issued by the Italian Government (non-EU students with EU equivalent status): 
  - EU permit for long-term residents (previously, EC residence permit for long-term residents or residence card); 
  - for employment, self-employment or investors; 
  - for family reasons; 
  - for political asylum and subsidiary protection; 
  - for religious reasons; 
  - for special cases (articles 18, 18 bis and 22(12-quater) of Italian Legislative Decree No. 286 of 25 July 1998); 
  - for calamities (article 20 bis of Italian Legislative Decree No. 286 of 25 July 1998); 
  - for an act of particular civic valour (article 42 bis of Italian Legislative Decree No. 286 of 25 July 1998); 
  - for special protection (article 32(3) of Italian Legislative Decree No. 25 of 28 January 2008). Please note: except in the case of entry into Italy for work purposes, any visa issued and the mere request for a first issue of one of the residence permits indicated do not confer EU equivalent status. Contact the International Desk to check your situation; 
  - residence card for UK citizens (article 50 of the Treaty on the European Union; article 18.4 EU-UK Withdrawal Agreement). Pending such a document, UK citizens may submit a certificate issued by their town council of residence, proving that they registered with the civil registry office before 31 December 2020; 
  - for temporary protection (Italian Prime Ministerial Decree of 28 March 2022). Please note: the residence permit for temporary protection is temporary and at the moment Italian law does not provide for the possibility of converting it into a student permit. For a national restricted-access degree programme (e.g. Medicine), EU equivalent status still has to be confirmed by the competent ministerial offices; 

• you are a citizen of a non-EU country, but you have been a resident in Italy for at least one year and you hold a high school diploma obtained in Italy, which gives you access to the degree programme of choice (non-EU students with EU equivalent status); 
• you are a citizen of a non-EU country, you have obtained the qualification giving access to your chosen degree programme in Italy, and you hold a valid residence permit for study purposes; 
• you are a citizen of a non-EU country, you are enrolled in a degree programme at an Italian university, you hold a valid residence permit for study purposes, and you intend to apply for a transfer or move for the next A.Y.; 
• you are a citizen of a non-EU country, are enrolled in individual learning activities at an Italian university, hold a valid residence permit for study purposes, and intend to enrol in the next academic year in a degree programme related to or resulting from the individual learning activities you have passed, without returning to the Italian Embassy in your country for a new pre-enrolment and a new visa. Please note: In order to be able to enrol in the related or resulting degree programme, you must have passed at least one single learning activity. Contact the International Desk for more information on the requirements for renewing your residence permit for study purposes; 
• you or a member of your family are part of the staff serving in foreign Diplomatic Missions or in international organisations based in Italy and you hold a Diplomatic Identity Card issued by MAECI (Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation) or a 'Mission' Residence Permit. Please note: the 'Mission' permit cannot be converted into a 'Student' permit.

If you are a citizen of a non-EU country and reside outside Italy, you can follow this route.

2. If you want to enrol in an international programme, prove your knowledge of the applicable language. Check the website of the degree programme for information on how to do so. 

3. Plan your arrival in Italy months in advance: 
   

   - look for accommodation in Italy;
   - collect documentation on your foreign qualification (the time required will depend on the country in which you obtained it); 
   - check with the Embassy or Consulate for an entry visa: the time required to obtain one will depend on the country you come from.
