Basics in biochemistry

Course contents

Key concepts:
Biological molecules (biomolecules): The molecules fundamental to life, mainly consisting of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur.
Carbohydrates: Sugars that provide energy and have structural roles.
Lipids: Fats and oils that store energy and form cell membranes.
Proteins: Macromolecules essential for cell structure, function and regulation.
Nucleic acids: DNA and RNA, which contain genetic information.
Enzymes: Biological catalysts that accelerate chemical reactions.
Few words about Metabolism: Set of chemical reactions that take place in cells to produce energy and synthesise biomolecules.
