Learning outcomes

At the end of the programstudent willhave:- a general knowledge of the most important dimensions (epistemological, linguistic, cultural and technical) of translation practice and theory, with particular emphasis on the linguistic point of view; - a general knowledge of the most relevant translation theories (also in a diachronic perspective); - the linguistic-cultural tools for approaching the translation phenomenon in a critical manner; - a knowledge of the publishing world and its activities in relation to translation practice.

Course contents

The thirty-hour course aims first and foremost to provide an overview of the history of the discipline from a diachronic perspective, before focusing on the fundamental issues in translation studies. We will focus in particular on the concepts of equivalence, the translation process and the function of translation, concluding with the role of the translator and the changes brought about by the advent of new technologies.

The reference field will be literary translation, with some mention of polysystem theory and the publishing industry.

Readings/Bibliography

The reference manual will be Jeremy Munday's Introducing Translation Studies, which can be used in its original version (Introducing Translation Studies, Munday, 2008) or in Italian translation (Bononia University Press, 2012, translated by Chiara Bucaria).

These text will be supplemented by other critical essays indicated during the course.

Teaching methods

The lessons will be partly lectures and partly seminars with discussions with students on essays and critical approaches; some lessons will also be dedicated to translation practice and student presentations.

Assessment methods

The exam will be an oral exam in which students must demonstrate that they have read the textbook and critical bibliography, and that they have understood and explored the topics covered in class. During the course, students will be asked to present a case study, which will be evaluated and discussed during the exam.

23-24-25 sufficient test that demonstrates adequate but general knowledge of the subject matter, simple exposition, uncertainties in the application of theoretical concepts in French.

18-22 barely sufficient test that demonstrates adequate but general knowledge of the subject matter, simple exposition, uncertainties in the application of theoretical concepts in French.

Insufficient test that does not demonstrate adequate acquisition of knowledge of the subject matter that is fragmentary and superficial, with errors in the application of concepts, and poor exposition

In addition to the reference manual, video and multimedia documents will be presented.
Each lesson will be presented on a PPT and then shared on Virtuale.
