Learning outcomes

At the end of the module, the student is familiar with grammatical, lexicographical, encyclopedic tools, reference corpora, and other online and print reference materials; he/she knows the fundamental translation techniques, methodologies, and strategies to be applied in the pre-translative analysis of the source text, documentation, and editing and revision of the target text, depending on the communicative functions of the texts to be translated and the translation assignment. He/she is able to apply these dynamics in translating a variety of semi-specialized texts, including editorial texts, from Chinese into Italian, in accordance with a medium to high level of translation competence.

Course contents

During the course, students will analyze various Chinese-language texts, identify their main features and learn to apply the most suitable translation strategies, supported by a solid commentary to their translation. In particular, we will focus on analyzing typical structures of the written language, delving into grammar and learning how to develop effective translation solutions in the target language.

The texts to be translated will be provided on the “Virtuale” platform.

Teaching methods

The course requires mandatory attendance of at least 70 percent of the lectures.
The lectures will be seminar-based and will encourage student participation in the analysis and translation of the texts covered. Each week the professor will provide a text that will be analyzed in class in order to identify its salient features. Afterwards, students will try their hand in groups at translating the first part of the text, which will then be discussed in class. The translation of the remaining part will have to be completed individually and sent to the teacher via email. Some of these translations will be corrected in class.
All completed translations, together with their commentary, should be sent to the professor at least two weeks before the exam.

Assessment methods

To qualify for the exam, all students must send all translations assigned during the course, together with the commentary, to the professor at least two weeks in advance.
During the exam, students will be asked to translate a text of approximately 500 characters, similar to those covered during the course, which will be given a score from 0 to 20. Candidates will also be required to prepare a short commentary to illustrate the main translation strategies adopted. The commentary will be given a score from 0 to 10. Three hours are allotted for the exam.

 

For the "Interpretation and Translation" curriculum:

The final grade for the integrated course of LETTERATURA E TRADUZIONE DELLA LINGUA CINESE (SECONDA LINGUA) is defined on the average of the marks given in the two component tests of the examination itself (one test for TRADUZIONE IN AMBITO SETTORIALE - LINGUA CINESE (SECONDA LINGUA) and one test for LETTERATURA DEI PAESI DI LINGUA CINESE (SECONDA LINGUA) II.


For the "International Communication for Business and Institutions" curriculum:

The final grade for the integrated course of LINGUAGGI SETTORIALI E MEDIAZIONE - LINGUA CINESE (SECONDA LINGUA) is defined on the average of the marks obtained in the two component tests of the examination itself (one test for METODI E PRATICHE AVANZATE DELLA TRADUZIONE DAL CINESE (SECONDA LINGUA) ALL'ITALIANO and one test for INTERPRETAZIONE DIALOGICA IN AMBITO SETTORIALE - LINGUA CINESE (SECONDA LINGUA).

Students with specific learning difficulties (SpLD) or with disabilities that can affect their ability to attend courses are invited to contact the University service for students with disabilities and SLD at the earliest opportunity -- ideally before the start of the course: https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students. Assessment Methods:

30-30 L: excellent evidence demonstrating excellent acquisition of translation techniques, excellent understanding of the Chinese language text, and accuracy in translating into Italian.

27-29: above-average proof, with minor errors or otherwise compensated for by more than sufficient demonstration of the required language knowledge and skills.

24- 26:valid proof, but with some obvious errors denoting partial acquisition of the required knowledge and skills.

21- 23:sufficient evidence but with conspicuous limitations in the knowledge and skills to be acquired.

18- 20: evidence that meets only the minimum criteria of knowledge and skills to be acquired.

insuff.: basic knowledge has not been acquired; the exam should be retaken.
