Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, the student will understand the basics of the molecular and cellular mechanisms necessary for the design of an experimental research proposals in the areas of biotechnological application, such as vaccine design and bioremediation.
Course contents
The main goal of the course is to provide a clear understanding of what a research project is. The entire course will be conducted by first covering the necessary molecular theoretical foundations to understand research techniques and methodologies, and secondly, illustrating the application of these techniques to carry out a research project.
Course objectives: (i) to present the main molecular technologies used for the study and manipulation of bacteria and viruses; (ii) to describe some biotechnological applications in biomedicine, industrial processes, and bioremediation.
Contents:
- Taxonomy and Phylogeny
- Microbial Ecology and Physiology
- Microbial Community Analysis
- Biotechnologies in Biomedicine
- Microbial Biotechnologies Applied to Food Industry and Pharmaceuticals
- Principles of Bioremediation
- Structural and Functional Characteristics of Viruses
- Biotechnological Applications of Viruses or Viral Elements
- Definition of Characteristics of a Biotechnological Project and Evaluation Criteria (significance, impact, innovation, experimental strategy)
- Administrative, Legislative, and Ethical Aspects of Research Projects.
Readings/Bibliography
The educational material presented during the lessons will be made available to students in electronic format.
Teaching methods
The lectures consist of PowerPoint presentations and the discussion of publications on specific topics, with guidance provided on how to find these online.
The lessons include interactive parts between students and the lecturer for discussion on the development of experimental ideas and research strategies.
Assessment methods
The final exam consists of the formulation/discussion of a proposal/project that involves the use of viral/microbial apects in a biotechnological context, based on the knowledge gained and considering feasibility, innovativeness, and impact.
