- Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering (cod. 9065)
Learning outcomes
The course provides knowledge on the basic principles and operating mechanisms of communications networks, with particular reference to computer networks. At the end of the course, the student has gained knowledge about architectures, protocols and standards for local and geographical area networks, and for related services. The student also learns the architecture and protocols of the Internet.
Course contents
- Introduction to telecommunication networks and services, ISO OSI and TCP/IP reference models.
- Basic concepts of telecommunication network protocols: error control, reliable communications, multiple access, routing, basics of flow and congestion control.
- Internet architecture, application protocols, HTTP and DNS, UDP and TCP transport protocols, IP network protocol, addressing, routing protocols.
- Local area networks (LANs), Ethernet (IEEE 802.3) and its evolution, wireless local area networks (IEEE 802.11), LAN interconnection equipment and virtual local area networks (VLANs).

Teaching methods
Lectures.
Practical experiments and demonstrations on:
- network traffic analysis (Wireshark);
- network virtualization and cloud technologies;
- network applications programming principles;
- IP network configuration and testing.
Assessment methods
The final examination will assess the student's ability to understand the main concepts and the basic protocols used in telecommunication networks.
Students will be asked to answer to a computer-based test followed by an oral exam. The test consists of multiple-choice questions on all course topics and a written exercise.
Students with specific learning disorders (SLD) or temporary or permanent disabilities are kindly requested to contact the relevant office at https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en . The office is in charge of proposing possible adaptations, which must be submitted 15 days in advance to the approval of the instructor, who will also assess the appropriateness in relation to the educational objectives of the course.
