Learning outcomes

At the end of the training, the student will have attended profitably the Department of Orthodontics and will therefore have a preparation that allows to recognize, address and solve quite complex cases related to the orthodontic problems.

Course contents

The clinical internship at the Orthognathodontics Department of the Dental Clinic is aimed at consolidating the student’s competencies, preparing them for the autonomous management of patients. The training program is designed to refine, under supervision, technical, relational, and organizational skills, with particular focus on:

  • Diagnosis of the main dento-skeletal malocclusions;

  • Use of orthodontic instruments;

  • Knowledge and application of bonding materials;

  • Placement of brackets on patients;

  • Bending and adjustment of simple orthodontic archwires;

  • Sterilization protocols and procedures for orthodontic instruments;

  • Preparation and disinfection of clinical workspaces;

  • Guided discussion of orthodontic and multidisciplinary aspects of the clinical cases managed in the department.

Assessment methods

The final examination consists of an oral test aimed at assessing the achievement of the competencies outlined in the course learning objectives.

The maximum attainable grade is 30 with honors, while the minimum passing grade is 18/30.

Final grade scale:

  • Preparation on a very limited number of topics covered in the course, with analytical skills emerging only with the lecturer’s guidance, and overall correct language use → 18–19;

  • Preparation on a limited number of topics covered in the course, with independent analytical skills limited to purely operational aspects, and correct language use → 20–24;

  • Preparation on a broad range of topics covered in the course, ability to make autonomous choices in critical analysis, and command of specific terminology → 25–29;

  • Comprehensive preparation on the topics covered in the course, ability to make autonomous choices in critical analysis and connections, full command of specific terminology, and strong argumentative and self-reflective skills → 30–30L (with honors).
