Learning outcomes
At the end of the internship the student has successfully attended the Orthodontic service and therefore possesses a preparation that allows to recognize, face and solve simple cases related to orthodontic problems.
Course contents
The internship consists of a theoretical component describing the main types of fixed and removable appliances used in orthodontics; a practical component consisting of hands-on exercises; and finally, a portion of the hours will be dedicated to attending the Orthodontics department, aiming to provide students with a hands-on approach to the discipline and complete their training.
Specifically, the theoretical component will introduce the concept of orthodontic brackets, explaining their origin and characteristics in detail, and describing how to place and remove them. Regarding removable appliances, the characteristics of the main types of activators will be outlined, and finally, the various types of orthodontic retainers will be described, with particular attention to the creation of a Hawley Appliance.
During the practical lessons, students will practice bending orthodontic wires to learn how to model different arch shapes. They will be able to reproduce first-, second-, and third-order bends and create loops to open or close spaces. Typodonts with various types of commercially available orthodontic brackets will also be shown, and will be evaluated the possibility of positioning some direct brackets on positioning cards and/or a plaster model. Finally, students will be able to examine the various types of activators described during the theoretical lessons.

Assessment methods
Assessment Methods:
Oral exam and written test. Specifically, the oral exam is assessed through a series of questions designed to assess knowledge of the topics covered in class and the solution to practical problems and technical aspects covered during the theoretical and practical lessons.
The written exam will provide a clinical case study of a patient, along with extraoral and intraoral photographs and cephalometric tracings. Students will be asked to formulate an aesthetic, dental, and skeletal diagnosis and outline a treatment plan.
The end-of-course exam therefore aims to assess the student's achievement of the learning objectives and their understanding of the topics covered in class.
Learning assessment:
Demonstration of expressive mastery and specific language skills will be evaluated with excellent marks.
A predominantly mechanical and/or rote knowledge of the subject matter, a lack of articulated synthesis and analysis skills, and/or correct but inappropriate language will result in a fair grade.
Learning gaps and/or inappropriate language in a context of minimal knowledge of the exam material will result in grades barely above passing.
Learning gaps, inappropriate language, or a lack of orientation within the course's bibliographical materials will only result in a failing grade and a failure to pass the exam.
The instructors responsible for the courses participate in a joint evaluation of the student's overall performance, and the final grade is expressed as a grade out of 30. The exam is passed with a grade of at least 18/30. Students who achieve the highest grade (30/30) may be awarded honors. Students who demonstrate mastery of the key concepts covered in the course will be guaranteed a passing grade.
Indications regarding any additional measures that can be adopted by students with DSA:
Students with learning disorders and\or temporary or permanent disabilities: please, contact the office responsible (https://site.unibo.it/studenti-con-disabilita-e-dsa/en/for-students) as soon as possible so that they can propose acceptable adjustments. The request for adaptation must be submitted in advance (15 days before the exam date) to the lecturer, who will assess the appropriateness of the adjustments, taking into account the teaching objectives.
