At the end of the module, the student possesses the knowledge and ability to understand the issues related to radiation exposure: of workers, the general population, and the environment.
Course contents
Overview of the History Related to the Discovery of Ionizing Radiation
Ionizing Radiation in the Environment and Natural Radioactivity: Origin and distribution.
Basics of Particle Physics and Interactions Between Ionizing Radiation and Matter: Natural radioactivity. Physical quantities, radiological protection quantities, and operational quantities.
Justification and Optimization Principles in the protection of workers and the general population.
Italian Legislation on Worker and Population Protection (D.Lgs. 101/2020): With a focus on physical surveillance and radiological protection in hospital environments. Classification of areas and workers. Maximum permissible dose levels.
Applications and Protective Measures in Medical Settings. Main Fields of Ionizing Radiation Use in Hospital Environments: Diagnostic Radiology, Radiotherapy, and Nuclear Medicine. Characteristics of the main techniques and methods for reducing doses to workers.
Radiation Measurement and Dosimetry. Radiation Measuring Instruments: Basic principles of operation. Methods for performing personal and environmental dosimetry.
Risks During Pregnancy and Radiological Protection Measures
Risk According to Pregnancy Stage and Absorbed Dose. Radiological protection for pregnant patients in Diagnostic Radiology and Nuclear Medicine. Breastfeeding and Child Protection: Radiological protection in Nuclear Medicine.
