Learning outcomes

The course provides basic tools for planning and organising the teaching of historical-philosophical disciplines (ancient, medieval, modern and contemporary thought). The study of the topics is intended to facilitate the critical ability to select secondary bibliography (textbooks and anthologies) and to identify transversal topics through the reading and commentary of philosophical texts.

Teaching the History of Philosophy: Historiographical Problems and Thematic Cores (Module B: Medieval Thought)

Presenting the history of medieval philosophy is a complicated task. Although it covers almost a thousand years of history, its treatment is often sacrificed not only for reasons of time, but also because of the difficulty in placing some of its instances within the framework of the history of thought as a whole. Authors such as Augustine of Hippo, John Scotus Eriugena, Avicenna, Averroes, Moses Maimonides, Thomas Aquinas, and Bonaventure of Bagnoregio seem more alien than the ancient philosophers to contemporary thinking. Yet the multivocality of medieval thought, its diverse roots, and the recurrence of certain themes constitute a stimulus to study and deepen.

In this module we therefore intend to outline a general framework of some historiographical problems relating to the reception and study of medieval thought in the 21st century. Then, in agreement with the lecturers of modules A and C, a common philosophical theme will be explored.
