Learning outcomes

The course provides basic tools for the planning and organization of teaching historical-philosophical disciplines (ancient thought, medieval thought, modern and contemporary thought). The study of the topics covered aims to foster critical ability in selecting secondary bibliography (manuals and anthologies) and identifying transversal thematic cores through the reading and commentary of philosophical texts.

Course contents

Teaching the History of Philosophy: Historiographical Problems and Thematic Cores (Module A: Ancient Thought)

In school programs, the study of ancient thought plays a crucial role, as it introduces students to the discovery of philosophy for the first time. It is not just about explaining the theories of the most significant ancient thinkers. Equally important is taking advantage of these first lessons to discuss general themes and concepts – a kind of red thread that can guide students in subsequent years. Balancing these two objectives is challenging, and the risk is sacrificing some significant moments of Greek and Latin philosophy (particularly from the Imperial period). This will be discussed in class, aiming to clarify the conceptual coordinates of studying ancient philosophy in the 20th and 21st centuries. Thus, in agreement with the teachers of modules A and C, a common philosophical theme will be explored in depth.
