Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will have a deep knowledge of historical and cultural events that led to the modern concept of restoration, through the invastigation of episodes of particular significance from XV to XX century; therefore, the student will be able to understand the actuality through a critical severe analysis and to proceed with expertise in the field of preservation science because of the comparison with the evolution of the taste and the practices over the centuries. Finally, he/she wiil be able to recognize old and previous interventions of restoration in such a way to proceed safely to practical activities.
Course contents
The course is related to the methodology of restoration which has been qualifying in the 15th to the 21st centuries through a number of cases, focused essentially on operations carried out over time on works of art in marble and bronze.
Particular attention is reserved to twentieth-century theory and restoration work, dealt with by examining the thought of the greatest science conservation experts, with reference also to the history and methodology of virtual restoration.

Teaching methods
Lectures will be complemented by visits to museums, art galleries and restoration laboratories.
Assessment methods
The exam will be conducted through an interview aimed at verifying students' understanding of the lessons and the study of the texts. The level of critical and methodological preparation of the student will be verified, by examining the mastery of the contents, the appropriate expression, and the appropriate language for the subject matter.
