Learning outcomes

Social Theatre (LM)

At the end of the course students will know about the main historical and methodological aspects of theatre involved in the areas of the school, the prison, the physical or mental disabilities, marginalized areas and communities.

Furthermore, students will be provided with the tools of a critical and operational approach to the different expressions of the social inclusion theatre.

Course contents

Module I = first 30 hours: Introduction to Social Interaction Theatre

The first module of the course provides in-depth knowledge about the historical references of theatre between theatrical and social scene, starting from the experience of animation theatre, since its origins in 1960s in schools, until the most recent experiences in social and disadvantaged areas.

The program will initially address the pre-existent experiences of J.L. Moreno, A. Lacis, W. Benjamin, and then address the current search for new languages and the enhancement of other and different theatrical professionalism, with detainees actors and bearers of mental and physical disability.

Module II = following 30 hours: Theatre in Prison. With a focus on Compagnia della Fortezza

The second module, monographic, is an in-depth exploration of the main theatrical experiences open to the participation of non-actors and actors of new professionalism in the areas of Prison Theatre. A special focus will be on the experience of Compagnia della Fortezza in Volterra. It is expected the contribution of the students, through group research.

The 6 CFU course unit consists of module I, while the 12 CFU course unit consists of the two modules.

Teaching methods

Lectures; Lectures open to the contribution of the students; Video projections; Meetings with artists and theatre professionals. Students will also be invited to the vision of theatre performances which will be discussed in class. In particular the following review is to be included as part of the course: “Interscenario 6 – Le generazioni del nuovo” (February-April 2018: Centro Teatrale La Soffitta - ITC Teatro - Teatri di Vita).

Assessment methods

Attending students will face audits in progress through the course and also face a final interview.

Non-attending students will sit the oral examination.

The achievement of an organic vision of the issues addressed during the classes, the ownership of a mastery of expression and specific language, the capability of guidance within the reference materials will be assessed with marks of excellence. Mechanical or mnemonic knowledge of matter, poorly articulating and not always appropriate language will lead to discrete assessments. Training gaps, inappropriate language, minimal knowledge of the material will lead to votes that will not exceed the sufficiency. Training gaps, inappropriate language, lack of guidance within the reference materials will lead to failed assessments.
