Learning outcomes

At the end of the course students will be acquainted with the evolution of urban and rural settelments during the Middle Ages and more specifically he/she will: 1) know the different traditions of study and the international debate on this topic; 2) be able to further study issues such as urbanism in the medieval age, transformations of techniques and types of buildings, the birth of medieval hamlets and castles.

Course contents

The course is divided in three sections. The first section focuses on the birth and development of medieval archaeology in Italy and abroad. The second section considers the main issues explored by the discipline, while the third is focused on the subject: Towns and trade in the early middle ages.

Assessment methods

The final exam consists of an oral colloquium, conceived in order to evaluate the accomplishment of the main targets of the course. The final mark is the average of the evaluation of the answers concerning three specific topics which are part of the program.
