This workshop aims to further improve students' general English language proficiency and develop the necessary communication skills for effective oral/written production. In particular, it will focus on illustrating the basic writing features and communicative strategies required to write an impressive CV and cover letters. Moreover, the course will improve students' ability to attend job/academic interviews exploring the basic verbal and non-verbal communication techniques.

Course contents

The course is designed to:

  • §outline what employers are looking for in CVs and cover letters and how to tell employers what they want to know;
  • understand which linguistic features, communicative techniques and strategies make a good application;
  • explore what CVs and cover letters should include;
  • discuss the most frequently-asked questions about applications and job/academic interviews;
  • stress the importance of speaking tactics, non-verbal communication and cross-cultural differences for a successful interview.

NOTE: Students are required to attend at least 80% of the lectures and to produce some papers during the course.

Assessment methods

Students are required to attend at least 80% of lectures and to produce some papers to be discussed in class. Only students who hand in their papers regularly during the course are admitted to the final oral exam on the course contents.
