Learning outcomes

At the end of the seminar the student is able to use the applied tools for the empirical study of the distribution and redistribution of income.

Course contents

The seminar will be taught by Giovanni Gallo (giovanni.gallo@unimore.it [mailto:giovanni.gallo@unimore.it] ).

1. Introduction to the seminar, presentation of the Bank of Italy Survey on Housholds' Income and Wealth (SHIW) and the main micro datasets, both italian and international (Eurostat EU-Silc, LIS).

2. Introduction to the main Stata commands; exploration of the SHIW annual archives and dataset creation.

3. Introduction to the historical archive of the SHIW; construction of the equivalence scales (ISEE; OECD; modified OECD).

4. Graphical representation of income distributions (frequency density function, Lorenz curve, Pen parade, TIP curve, ...).

5. Computation of inequality and poverty indices (1).

6. Computation of inequality and poverty indices (2).

7. The European indicators of poverty and social exclusion. Introduction to subjective poverty measures.

8. Analysis of the redistributive effects of public policies: some examples.

Notes of the lectures will be available in electronic format.

Teaching methods

Lectures in the computing lab.

Assessment methods

The student is expected to write an essay on the topics studies during the course, using STATA, and present it at the end of the course.

Teaching tools

Access to personal computer and availability of the software STATA.
