Learning outcomes

At the end of the classes students have a deep knowledge of  latin literature, they are able to analyse latin texts with regard to language, style, subject, they understand textual problems referring to latin texts, they use the tools needed for a philological research.

Course contents

The course is divided into 2 parts, of 6 ECTS each: the first will be held by prof. Bruna Pieri (classes start on February, 2nd) , the second one by prof. L. Graverini. Students of MD  "Filologia, Letteratura e Tradizione Classica" are supposed to attend both courses.

Teaching methods


As for A. section, lectures in class; students are supposed to prepare parts B. and C. by themselves.

Assessment methods


In a viva voce examination, the students will be tested through the reading and translation of the Latin texts dealt with in class (A) and listed in the programme (C) and through questions on choosed readings.

assessment guidelines:
failing grades: lack of basic linguistic knowledge and inability to produce a correct translation and interpretation of the text.


passing grades: language proficiency at an intermediate level; translation and literary interpretation of the texts mostly correct, but inaccurate and lacking autonomy

excellent grades: language proficiency at an upper-mid level; translation and interpretation of the texts not only correct, but performed with autonomy and precision. Knowledge of Latin prosody and metrics.

Erasmus or foreigner students are allowed to attend the exam - as far as translation from Latin is concerned - in English, French, German or Spanish.
