Learning outcomes

The course offers a detailed analysis of different political cultures showing how, in even more globalized societies, these political cultures act simultaneously.
At the end of the course, the student will be able to interpret the main theories of globalization and the main political cultures acting in the national and international political context.

Course contents

 

The analysis of the relationship between political culture and secularization as historically increasing process, with specific effects on contemporary world, is the thematic frame students are required to take into account. So they will examine the different political cultures  from a national and international point of view as well, and they will consider different models of political agency as they were developed by the contemporary thought.

The institutional part deals with the relationship between culture and politics, focusing on political debate in Italy nowadays. Monographic part is devoted to the great debate around S. Huntington's The Clash of Civilizations and the Remaking of World Order as well as to effects the work produced. Briefly, the programms main issues are: 1. Sociological analysis of political culture in the classics; 2. Ideology, utopia and society in the sociology of knowledge;  3. Process of secularization and political cultures; 4. Political culture and social complexity; 5. Fondamentalism and modernity. 6. The notion of "axial age"; 6. Political culture and civic culture; 7. Contemporary political cultures; 8. Religion and violence; 9. Clash or holy alliance between civilizations and/or religions?

Teaching methods

The teaching will be open to dialogue, involving as much as possible students who wish to ask questions, require further knowledge or participate.

Assessment methods

 

The examination will consist of two written intermediate tests and one oral test. In the institutional part, students can find texts to prepare for each test. First intermediate test:  F. H.Tenbruck, W. A. Boekenfoerde and S. Cotta. Second intermediate test: C. Taylor and I. Diamanti. During the lectures, students will receive papers and essays strictly linked to the current events and that can be useful in their studies. For the oral test, students have to choose one of the following sections: 1. S. Huntington, A. Panebianco; 2. M. Graziano, F. Jullien; 3. J. Habermas, R. Girard.

Non-attending students should take only one examination based on the texts of Institutional part (16 open questions within 90 minutes) and one oral text. Non-attending students will receive from prof. Allodi a program of additional texts, including another section of the monographic part.

 

Both attending and non-attending students have to choose, together with prof. Allodi, an argument on the base of which they are required to write a paper for the oral test. They should send it to leonardo.allodi@unibo.it at least 10 days before the date of such a test.
