15623 - Flight Mechanics

Academic Year 2014/2015

  • Moduli: Fabrizio Giulietti (Modulo 1) Emanuele Luigi De Angelis (Modulo 2)
  • Teaching Mode: Traditional lectures (Modulo 1) Traditional lectures (Modulo 2)
  • Campus: Forli
  • Corso: First cycle degree programme (L) in Aerospace Engineering (cod. 8263)

Learning outcomes

Starting from the main results of aircraft subsonic aerodynamics, fundamental issues of jet and propeller aircraft performances are carried out within the classical flight condition (steady level flight, climb, gliding, and steady turn). Longitudinal, lateral and directional static stability and longitudinal controllability are also addressed.

Course contents

Course introduction. Aircraft geometry. Earth atmosphere ISA model. Reference frames and 3 dof point-mass model. Drag polar and aerodynamic efficiency. Steady level flight aircraft performances: range and endurance: jet and propeller aircraft. Climb and descent performances. Steady turn. Introduction to aircraft stability. Longitudinal static stability: neutral point. Directional and lateral stability. Longitudinal controllability. Maneuvering point.
