Course contents

The role of analytical chemistry in agriculture and industry. Type of analysis. Testing laboratories.

Introduction to sampling. Definitions. Types of samples. Sampling plan. Sampling of solid materials. Sampling of liquids. Sampling of gases. Sampling instruments and storage of samples. 

Sample pretreatment. Grinding of solids. Leaching and extraction of soluble components.  Soxhlet apparatus. Decomposition and dissolution of inorganic solids. An "ideal" dissolution procedure. Use of mineral acids. Fusion procedures. Decomposition of organic and biological matrices. Dry and wet- ashing. Ashing with excited oxygen. The Oxygen Flask. Microwave-assisted decomposition.

Introduction to separation and preconcentration techniques. Solvent extraction. The extraction of metal ions. Chelate systems. Efficiency of extraction. pH-extraction curves. Ion-association extraction systems. Ion-exchange resins. Gas and vapour phase separations. Coprecipitation. Electrolytic separations.

Official methods of analysis and their applications.

Development of new analytical methods. 

Trace analysis in industrial materials. Accuracy of results. Containers, reagents and laboratories for trace analysis. Clean rooms.

Quality assurance and quality control of the analytical measurements. Good laboratory practice (GLP). Personnel and laboratory's management. Facilities and equipment. Methods.

Reference materials (RM) and certified reference materials (CRM). Preparation, properties and certification of CRM. Collaborative studies. Reports.
