Learning outcomes

Students gain basic skills for data analysis in Excel and R.

Course contents

Introduction to descriptive statistics and probability with R and Excel:

- Loading and exporting data
- Creating and transforming variabes. Management of missing data
- Univariate distributions and their graphical representation
- Summarisation of univariate distributions: measures of scale and variability
- Contingency tables and related indices
- Simulation exercises for studying random variables and their properties

Excel: Some additional reading will be provided during the course.

Teaching methods

Some statistical problems will be analysed by means of statistical softwares. The course will be based on laboratory applications.

Assessment methods

The final exam is held in a computer laboratory with the software Excel and R. The students can consult teaching material adopted along the lectures. The prove comprises two exercises: the first one consists in descriptive analyses performed in Excel. The second exercise consists in descriptive analyses performed in R.
